We always knew we would live and work overseas at some stage and it's something we have very much wanted to do. We have never made any official plans or even known when we would make a move overseas, we just knew it would happen someday... Well, that day has come. A job offer came up that K could not refuse and we decided to bite the bullet and accept it. K and I have held off on other career opportunities in the past due to my business and not being able to up and leave it. However, our philosophy now is that we need to grab life by the horns and hold on. If we didn't accept this position, who knows if and when the next one would be available. Opportunities like this only come up in life a few times and when they do, they need to be taken. One saying that is appropriate in this situation and that I like to quote is:

"Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable."

So basically, I do not want to regret not taking this chance and moving to Denmark. The time is not the most convenient for me and my career of running my own web design business but I have to ask myself the question, When will be the right time? If K and I could choose when to leave we would allow for some more time to get my business to a more mature stage, but unfortunately we do not have that luxury. I also can not expect K to put her career on hold any more for mine. It's unfortunate that our careers aren't friendly to each other. For them to both work, we both will have to make some sacrifices to allow the other to succeed.

Potential Challenges

Running a business - One potential challenge that could arise is the fact that I co-own a small web design and online marketing agency and am very much still active in the day to day running of the business. Me being away for long periods at a time means, whilst I'm away I wont be able to do a lot of the small impromptu jobs throughout the day that every business owner gets bombarded with. Whether it be a phone call I need to deal with or the office cleaning hasn't been done and needs chasing up. This is something we'll have to manage and deal with as best we can. Seeing family and friends - This is going to be an obvious challenge. Me spending a lot of time in Denmark means I can't hang out with my family and friends. He's a crazy little critter that cracks me up all the time. I'll definitely miss his antics when I come home after a busy day. I'll see him when I'm back in Australia but still will miss him. Taking care of our property - K and I bought a house quite a few years back which we now rent out. Sometimes things pop up which may need us to go around and fix something or meet a trades person. Our real estate agent does a good job taking care of it but it's always good being nearby in case we are needed.

New business opportunity - An opportunity I can see out of a move to Copenhagen is I have the potential to drum up business in Denmark and the UK. I am lucky to have a British passport which allows me to work in the UK and Denmark as there is a free-trade agreement between the two countries. I'm going to meet a number of new people and extend my network massively so making new business contacts could certainly be an option as well. Meeting new people - Moving to another country is no doubt a good way to meet new people. We already have a few friends over there so I'm sure they will introduce us to others. I have also done a bit of research on the local Muay Thai gym. I intend to start training there fairly often when I'm there. New life experience - This is another obvious advantage to moving overseas. It's a massive life experience that we will no doubt remember and talk about for the rest of our lives. It will open up new doorways to many different things A base to travel around Europe - Even though I was born in the UK and traveled quite a bit with my parents when I was young, I have not had the opportunity to see Europe as an adult. Being based in Denmark puts us very close so many countries we can visit.

My wife and I are looking forwards to the move and starting the next chapter of our life in Denmark. I'll be commuting to and from Sydney as much as I can to work on my business. I'll also be working on the range of projects we have running remotely and the occasional freelance job. Their will be challenges with the time difference and talking or meeting with clients but overall I will still be able to work on all the same projects I do now.
